As reported in a recent article on the Sprudge and BeanScene blogs, UC Davis – the renowned university based in California – celebrates the opening of its Coffee Center.

The public university of UC Davis in California, acclaimed for its research in the food processing and biotechnology fields, inaugurated its Coffee Center earlier this May. The 7000-square-foot facility, the first of its kind in the United States’ Academic world, is part of the university’s chemical-engineering program and was made possible by donations.

La Marzocco, continuing its commitment towards coffee culture and education, donated espresso machines and equipment to be used in the Coffee Center’s Espresso Laboratory, mirroring the importance of the manufacturer’s pursuit towards coffee research and progress along the entire value chain, from its very own Accademia del Caffé Espresso in Florence, Italy – featuring multiple brewing and sensory labs – to providing UC Davis Coffee Center with its latest technologies and innovations.

The mix of theoretical and practical expertise and elements from the Florentine company and its American branch – La Marzocco USA – are meant to ensure that future generations are able to experience the wonder of espresso with the most advanced machinery.

Guido Bernardinelli commented: “We’re proud to help the UC Davis Coffee Center bring their excellent focus on agriculture and engineering to espresso”.

Kent Bakke, Honorary President of La Marzocco, among the early supporters of this project along with partner Tim O’Connor, attended the ceremony: “We are honored to be a part of this adventure, as the Coffee Center has always taken espresso coffee seriously from an engineering and sensory standpoint. We particularly appreciate the important component of the Coffee Center being the precious human element at every point in the chain from seed to cup.”
